New Year, Softer Water: What to Check on Your Water Softener in 2026
By Utah Valley Plumbing

Hard water doesn’t take a break—and neither should your water softener. If you live in Utah County, you already know how bad mineral buildup can get. The new year is a perfect reminder to check in on your system and make sure it’s doing its job. Whether you’ve got a standard salt-based softener or a more advanced dual-tank system, here are the key things to look for in 2026:

1. Check the Salt Level

Your brine tank should be at least half full of salt. If it’s running low, your softener may be cycling without enough salt to treat your water—leading to hard water buildup and scale on fixtures. Use high-quality pellets or crystals for best results.

2. Look for Salt Bridges or Mush

Salt bridges (a hard crust forming over the water) or mushy salt can prevent proper regeneration. Break up the bridge or flush out the tank if needed. These are common issues in Utah’s dry winter climate when humidity is low.

3. Test Your Water

Use a test strip or meter to check the hardness of your water after it’s been softened. If you’re still seeing spots on dishes or dry skin, it could be time to service or replace your unit.

4. Check for Leaks or Standing Water

Leaks around the fittings or pooled water near the softener usually indicate a seal or valve issue. Don’t wait—small leaks can cause bigger plumbing issues down the line.

 5. Know the Age of Your System

If your softener is 10–15 years old, it may be time to consider a replacement. Technology has come a long way—newer models are more efficient, compact, and use less salt per cycle.

Bonus: Schedule a Professional Service
